Notes

  • Use the same yarn weight for all pieces. If different weights are used, the parts may not fit together and the bears won't stack correctly.
  • Choose a hook one to two sizes smaller than suggested for your yarn to keep stitches tight so stuffing won't show through.
  • The body and head instructions are the same for all three bears. Color-switch notes are for Panda only — skip them for Grizzly and Ice Bear.

Instructions

Eye Patch (make two — Panda only)

dark gray
  1. Make a slip knot and chain 2.
  2. R1: sc 6 into the first chain (6)
  3. R2: *inc* × 3 — partial row (6)
  4. Bind off. Leave a long tail to sew the eye patch to the head.

Body and Head (make one per bear)

  17. R28: *sc 3, dec* × 2, *dec* × 6, *sc 3, dec* × 2 (22)
  18. You can start stuffing the body here. Don't fully stuff the head yet — stuffing can get in the way of finishing the face.
  19. R29: *sc 2, dec* × 2, *inc* × 6, *sc 2, dec* × 2 (24)
  20. R30: *sc, dec* × 2, sc 12, *sc, dec* × 2 (20)
  21. Add the eyes now — see the Make the Face section below.
  22. R31: sc for entire row (20)
  23. R32: dec for entire row (10)
  24. Bind off.

Make the Face

  1. For Panda: place an eye in the middle of each eye patch, then position both patches on the head. The partial-row edge of each patch should face outward, not toward the center. Once placed, stitch the outer edge of each eye patch to the head.
  2. For Grizzly and Ice Bear: add eyes just above the nose area with 3–4 stitches between them. Suggested placement is in R28 at the second and fifth decrease stitches.
  3. Add the backing to each eye and fasten securely.
  4. Using black embroidery thread, stitch a nose centered on the top edge of the snout, spanning 3–4 stitches wide. Two or three loops are enough.
  5. Sew a mouth below the nose with black embroidery thread.
  6. To bind off the head: cut yarn leaving a 6-inch tail. Slip stitch into the next stitch and pull yarn through to bind off. Use the tapestry needle to close the hole with a whip stitch through the outer loops. Thread the needle into a nearby hole and out through any hole far from the top, pull slightly taut, then cut close — the end will pull back inside.

Tail (make one per bear)

bear color
  1. R1: sc 4 in magic circle (4)
  2. R2: *inc* × 4 (8)
  3. Bind off. Leave a long tail to sew the tail to the body.

Ear (make two per bear)

bear color
  1. R1: sc 4 in magic circle (4)
  2. R2: sc for entire row (4)
  3. Bind off. Leave a long tail to sew the ear to the head.

Front Leg (make two per bear)

bear color
  1. R1: sc 4 in magic circle (4)
  2. R2: *inc* × 4 (8)
  3. R3: sc for entire row (8)
  4. R4: *sc, inc* × 4 (12)
  5. R5: sc for entire row (12)
  6. Bind off. Leave a long tail to sew the leg to the body.

Back Leg (make two per bear)

bear color
  1. R1: sc 4 in magic circle (4)
  2. R2: *inc* × 4 (8)
  3. R3: sc for entire row (8)
  4. R4: *sc, inc* × 4 (12)
  5. R5: sc for entire row (12)
  6. R6: sc 6 — partial row (6)
  7. Bind off. Leave a long tail to sew the leg to the body.

Assembly

  1. Sew the ears to the top of each bear's head.
  2. Sew the front legs close together on the front of the body, and the back legs close together on the back. Keeping the legs close helps the bears stack stably.
  3. Sew the tail to the back of the body.
  4. Weave in and sew any remaining ends into the body to hide them.
