A chubby, squishy seal with the classic round amigurumi shape. Beginner-friendly and quick to work up — simple construction, satisfying result.

  • Crochet hook

    Size E (3.5mm), or a size that produces a tight stitch with your yarn.

Instructions

Back Flipper (make two)

  1. R1: sc 4 in magic loop and tighten (4)
  2. R2: *inc, sc* × 2 (6)
  3. R3: sc for entire row (6)
  4. R4: sc 2, inc, sc 3 (7)
  5. R5–6: sc for entire row (7)
  6. R7: sc 2, dec, sc 3 (6)
  7. Break yarn. slst into the next stitch. Pull through and tighten.

Connecting Flippers

  1. Place the two flippers together with the last dec facing out for each.
  2. Make a slip stitch and place on hook.
  3. Use a sc stitch to combine the two flippers.
  4. Sc around the two flippers in a counter-clockwise direction, resulting in 12 stitches. The next row will be the first row of the body.

  28. Attach eyes between rows 30 and 31 with three dec stitches between them.

  31. Dec until the hole is closed. Tip: use the front loops only to decrease — it helps hide the holes created when decreasing.
  32. Bind off and weave in end.

Side Flipper (make two)

  1. R1: sc 4 in magic loop and tighten (4)
  2. R2: *inc* × 4 (8)
  3. R3–7: sc for entire row (8)
  4. R8: sc through both sides of the flipper to close it. Use 3 to 4 stitches. (6)
  5. Cut the yarn with a long enough tail to sew the flipper to the body. Pull the tail through the last stitch and tighten.

Assembly

  1. Using the dark yarn, stitch a nose at the tip of the snout.
  2. Using the dark thread, stitch a mouth in the shape of an upside down "Y", starting at the nose.
  3. Attach the side flippers starting two rows behind the start of the head and nearer the bottom of the body.
